  1. Great question, Kaitlin. I like that you not only asked your group members to consider the feelings and thoughts of one of the characters, but you asked them to also put themselves in her shoes.

I think that sometimes we look at situations from the outside and fail to understand the importance these situations have on the lives of the people living them. It's always interesting and informative to step into the shoes of another person and try to think about how their situation would affect us.

For example: When we heard about the earthquake in Haiti last year, we talked about it in class. We looked at maps, watched news coverage, and felt badly for the people living there. However, I think it's also important to realizse that if we were in that situation and had lost members of our families, our homes, our schools, and all of our posessions, it would hugely change our way of life for a long time to come.

Looking forward to reading the other responses that I'm sure are on their way!

  2. P.S. Kaitlin, could you please change your font colour to something darker? I'm finding it very difficult to read the light blue text on the white background.

    Thanks!

  3. Good question,
If I were Beth in that situation I would probably do the same what she did?,Because if we say that our family is everything for us than thats our duty to make them safe even if it's dangerous for us.Because they are our life and our teacher. And to save them we will have to do something even though if our life is in danger. Thus the situation is very bad and we are not been able to go to that place I would do the same as Beth cause sometimes in some cases we even have to do some thing that we haven't never done before like what Beth did.So I would probably agree with Beth instead of sitting in New York and waiting for my family's call cause we don't know that if they are save or dead. And talking about money its not our family and it does not make us happy as our family can make.

  4. I would have been terrified would i have gone to help them in phuket ? NO the best thing you could do would just stay home and wait for them to call by going in search of them you only make things more confusing for everybody. Including the military with relief efforts its one more person in the way ii think personally its every selfish what Beth did . It was totally unnecscary to do what she did there were other options. And by going to Thailand she wasted more money that they may desperately need when they try and get home to new york considering most likely there pass ports are gone

  5. Just linking on to what Ms. C said when she was talking about we look at things from the out side it reminds me of a song called the Outside-Taylor Swift

Just thought I should mention that!

  6. I respect your opionion but I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree. I think it would have been a purely irrational decision to not go because if Beth hadn't than her brother would have been wondering around with no idea what to do or how to get home. So, they would be there worrying because they don't know where their mother or father are and Beth would have no idea of what condition her brother was in.

  7. I love that you're making connections Jess, but I'm wondering if you could explain your connection more fully. I'm not familiar with the song you mentioned, so I'm not really sure how it connects to what's happening in your novel or in this conversation.

  8. Hello, Wave readers,

If I was Beth, and I had made the discovery about her family and their disaster at the resort I would probably feel like I was helpless, and that I couldn’t do anything about what happened. If I decided to take action, (and after finding out about my family I probably would) I would try to make the best decision I could possible. Most likely I would consider staying home and waiting for my family’s call, but in the end I would probably want to go and see if I could help them, just like Beth did.

P.S Kaitlin- I love your question

  9. Well it connects to this conversation. Because like you said people look at things from the outside and the song talks about looking at things on the outside and like how you take a road that you want but it doesn't go the way you want it to and how you looking in and how no one notice's un till it's to late also like how no one help's they just stand there and watch because they don't care about anyone but them selves!

  10. Well I agree with Conner I think what beth is doing is really selfish. If that was me that means that I would just be in the way when people are trying to help other people. But I also agree with Iksha If that was my family I would feel horrible if well I was asleep in bed my family was being washed away by a wave. I would probably get most of our money and fly out there and look for my family. They are my family so why would I just sit and wait. What if they don’t come home? They would probably do the same for me so I would do the same for them. When I was in Thailand I would tear through the wreckage looking for them. I would ask everyone I passed if they saw them. In the end I would probably find a spot to sit and just die I cant live without them. or I would try to help other people find there loved one because I would know how it feels to lose some one you love. But I would actually never give up looking for them.

  11. I would have to disagree with you Kaitlin .... but I think that she's is panicking but she's trying to cheer her self up like she's trying to think positive so that she doesn't think of the worst possible thing then give up trying to look for them and then she never finds them. I also think that yes it might have been a waste of money but she cares about her family so she went looking for them.
